How to Unclog a Toilet16.11.17
We've all been there - the moment of horror when your toilet is blocked and you realise you never bothered to replace that plunger!
But no need to fear, we've outlined below some of our top tips on how to unclog your toilet without the help of a plunger...
First things first, if it doesn't flush properly straight away, don't flush it again! This will only add more water to the bowl and raise the water level further.
The DIY Method
Pour 1 cup of bicarbonate of soda and 2 cups of vinegar into the toilet - these will create a chemical solution to help dissolve the clogs. If you don't have these handy, try a few squirts of soap to help loosen the blockage. Pour hot water into the bowl from waist level - this force can help clear the blockage. Leave this overnight, and the water should have drained.
The Coat Hanger Method
Grab the nearest wire hanger you can find and straighten it, then wrap the end with a cloth or a rag to stop it scratching the inside of your toilet. Maneuver this in a circular motion to try until you clear the blockage in the drain and the water starts to drain. Flush when the water has trained and it should flow and drain as normal.
The Failsafe Method
We're not going to mess you around - with all the remedies in the world, dealing with a blocked toilet is always messy business, so our easiest tip of all?
Call a plumber. Save yourself the hassle and stress, and give us a call at J H Horn to help you out of a tight spot!
Reduce Your Energy Bill07.11.17
At J H Horn, we do what we can to be as environmentally friendly as possible, and so thought we would pull together our top tips on reducing waste in your home, and saving you money on your energy bill!
Many companies now allow you to view statements and accounts online, and also make payments electronically too. Going paperless is an easy way to minimise the amount of paper used by yourself and big brands – you may even be able to save a few pounds by choosing to refuse a paper bill!
With less than 3% of the Earth’s water being freshwater, we all need to do our part to contribute to saving such an important resource, and there are many easy ways to do this. Take a shorter shower, turn off the tap whilst brushing your teeth, and don’t run your dishwasher or washing machine until they are full. These small changes can make a big difference!
Keep your Fridge & Freezer Full
We all know we should keep the fridge door closed, but did you know that a full fridge and freezer can also save you money? Food within both acts as insulation, so means the fridge will take less time (and energy) to stay cool!
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
These three words can make a huge difference to daily life. Save up vegetable scraps to grow your own, reuse plastic bottles rather than always buying new, check with your local council which items you can recycle and reduce your amount of general waste. Buy a reusable shopping bag to save the 5p spend every supermarket visit.
Turn It Down
Turning your room temperature down by just 1ºC can cut your heating bills by up to £85 a year - a huge saving for a simple change. Not in a room? Then why heat it up? Utilise the timer function on your heating system to only heat the house when you’re home. Be smart!
Get a New Boiler
Replacing an old G-rated gas boiler for a new condensing model could potentially save you up to a whopping £652 per year. However, if the thought of a new boiler fills you with dread, simply booking a boiler service with our team of engineers could help you ensure you’re using it as efficiently as possible.
Turn It Off
You may think that simply switching your TV off with the remote is enough and it’s no longer using electricity, but this isn’t always the case – many electronic devices in your home remain on even when they’re off. Any cables plugged into a power outlet may be zapping energy when not in use. The simple solution? Unplug your devices when not in use.
Get Moving and Head Outside!
Even better than turning your TV off, ignore it completely and get out the house to embrace the great outdoors. We’re lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside here in Scotland, so take advantage of this and get moving! With beautiful walks and country trails, get your family moving whilst saving money on electricity bills!
Insulate your Home
Putting some thought into how you could improve the insulation in your home can go a long way to get saving energy. A quarter of heat is lost through the roof of an uninsulated home, so choosing the right loft insulation should pay for itself many times over.
Draught-Proof What and Where You Can
Draught-proofing your home is a simple way to make a change - blocking up unwanted gaps letting cold air out means you'll use less energy to heat your home. Look for draughts around windows and doors, but also loft hatches and around electrical fittings too!

Ben Arthur Challenge18.09.17
Scott McManus, one of our gas engineers, did his good deed for the day (maybe the month!) recently when he took on the challenge of climbing all 2,900ft of Ben Arthur along with the Pirie Park YFC 2006s squad.
Looking to raise funds for the club, Scott and the team spent a day climbing to the summit of Ben Arthur in September. They also arranged their first-ever Player of the Year Awards Ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the team over the past year.

Are you worried about burst pipes this winter?14.11.13
Yes, it's getting cold. Here are a few preventative measures you can take to help avoid burst pipes this winter:
- Leave your heating on using a low setting especially if your home is going to be empty for a while.
- If you live in a flat it's sensible to leave the heating on low in rooms where the mains pipe supplies neighbouring flats.
- If your neighbours don't have a key for your home make sure they have contact details for someone who does in case of an emergency.
- Don't place loft insulation under the tank as this stops heat from the rooms below helping to keep the tank warm.
- If you have toilet cisterns, water tanks or pipes in exposed places or unheated outbuildings make sure you insulate them. Better still, if not in use, drain them for winter.
- Dripping water increases the risk of freezing so have any leaks at taps or valves repaired as soon as you discover them. - Hardwood floors, sanded and varnished, pre-sealed and finished
- If the worst happens, remember to turn your water off at the mains.

Preparing for the colder weather - Check Your Roof06.08.13
One of the easily neglected areas of your home is the roof. Apart from loose or broken slats being a health hazard, any gaps in your roof will increase the risk of drafts and nullifies your roof insulation.
With the high chance of rain and colder weather on the way, we'd recommend you check your roof for any missing slates. If you're unable to check your roof yourself, why not arrange for one of our roofing experts to come out and assess your roof for you? Call our roofing experts on Hugh Scott 0141 420 1616.
